{"id":1039,"date":"2021-03-22T16:08:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-22T16:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.ontariohazelnuts.com\/?p=1039"},"modified":"2021-09-03T16:11:44","modified_gmt":"2021-09-03T16:11:44","slug":"2021-summer-research-students-agriculture-technician-positions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ontariohazelnuts.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/22\/2021-summer-research-students-agriculture-technician-positions\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 Summer Research Students &#8211; Agriculture Technician Positions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Ontario Hazelnut Association is looking for eager and enthusiastic summer students for work on research farms including data collection and scouting at various locations in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The OHA is helping to spearhead the development of a hazelnut industry in Ontario by working with researchers, government, producers, and processors across the province.&nbsp; The students will be directly involved in the efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Summer Research student<\/strong>&nbsp;will provide critical support to the development of the hazelnut industry in Ontario.&nbsp; The Summer Research student role will involve both infield work as well as data collection and analysis.&nbsp; The role is intended to be a full time under the CSJ program rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Role<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Summer Research student will be responsible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Visiting hazelnut orchards within a region, and recording information including cultivar types, age, size and tree counts<\/li><li>Creating orchard maps<\/li><li>Assessing and recording tree health data<\/li><li>Scouting orchards recording data on tree pests and disease<\/li><li>Supporting the planting, maintaining, and caring for Hazelnut trees,<\/li><li>Grass cutting, pruning and supporting irrigation needs of an orchard,<\/li><li>Compiling records, preparing spreadsheets and reports for the farmer and for the Ontario Hazelnut Association<\/li><li>Administrative and member support projects for the OHA<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Experience &amp; Skills Required<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The successful candidate will receive Integrated Pest Management and Scouting for Hazelnuts (IPM) training, developed by a leading expert, at the beginning of the assignment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Work independently and as part of a team,<\/li><li>Pay attention to detail, work safely, and demonstrate thoroughness in their work<\/li><li>Work outdoors in a variety of weather<\/li><li>Perform manual labour in the tree orchard<\/li><li>Work with mechanized equipment such as lawn mowers and other equipment<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, the Summer Research student will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Enjoy outdoor work and have experience in outdoor projects such as agriculture, lawn care, construction etc.<\/li><li>Have an educational interest in horticulture, agriculture, sciences or business<\/li><li>Possess a valid Ontario driver\u2019s licence, with own transportation to and from work<\/li><li>Have a good working knowledge of spreadsheets and Microsoft Office<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe that the Summer Researcher role would be an ideal fit for a number of academic fields.&nbsp; Students enrolled in horticulture, crop or plant science would gain substantial direct experience in production processes, in a novel crop, but also in research methodology.&nbsp; Students from a general sciences background, would gain experience in applied science and applied research.&nbsp; The gathering of observed data from the field, in uncontrollable environments \u2013 with weather and disease etc. \u2013 would showcase the challenges of field research.&nbsp; In addition, students from a business studies background might find the first-hand experience in the development of an emerging agro-industry.&nbsp; We are attempting to develop a new production sector in Ontario agriculture, which would be of interest to business and economics students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Locations Available<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OHA anticipates offering seven positions for the summer of 2020.&nbsp; One position might be available in each of the following locations\u2026.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Blenheim, Ontario<\/li><li>Wheatley, Ontario<\/li><li>Uxbridge, Ontario<\/li><li>West Lincoln, Ontario<\/li><li>Courtland, Ontario<\/li><li>Harley, Ontario<\/li><li>Thorndale, Ontario<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We thank all applicants for their interest in these roles.&nbsp; Please contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:contact@ontariohazelnuts.com\">contact@ontariohazelnuts.com<\/a>&nbsp;with your resume and include which site or sites you would be interested in working on.
